What is Calorie?
Calorie is a unit of energy derived from food or drink that fuels the human body. By technical definition, Calorie is the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of water (1kg) by 1º C. In simple terms, it is the fuel that the body needs to function properly. We must understand that the path to a healthy lifestyle lies in maintaining a balance between the calories we consume and the calories we expend. This balance depends upon an individual’s personal goals. If an individual consumes more calories than he spends, then it leads to weight gain, and when an individual spends more calories than he consumes, then it leads to weight loss.
It is very important to also understand that not all calories are equal. Different macronutrients provide different amounts of energy per gram. For example, 1 gram of Carbs provides 4 calories whereas 1 gram of fat provides 9 calories.
Caloric Surplus
A caloric surplus occurs when an individual’s intake of calories is more than their caloric expenditure. Caloric surplus when done consistently leads to weight gain as the excess calories get converted and stored as fat in our body. When caloric surplus is combined with weight training it leads to increased strength and increased muscle mass. This happens because the surplus provides the body with the extra energy needed for building and repairing muscles.
In the fitness context when an individual is consistent with caloric surplus it is called a bulking phase. In the bulking phase, individuals take in extra calories to put up extra weight and get the extra energy required for muscle growth.

Caloric Deficit
A calorie deficit occurs when you use more calories than consumed by the body. In other words, It is the state in which the number of calories you burn throughout activities and basic bodily functions exceeds the number of calories taken by your body. This is the fundamental concept that causes weight loss. When the body is in a calorie deficit, it begins to use stored energy (usually in the form of fat) to make up for the shortfall, leading to weight loss. It is often recommended for individuals looking to lose body weight healthily. To adopt a calorie deficit people start reducing calorie intake and increase physical activities. It should be taken care of that creating too large a calorie deficit or losing weight too rapidly can have negative effects on health. It is always advisable to take the recommendation of a pediatrician before following a calorie deficit.

Fitness Goals and Caloric Balance
Striking the right caloric balance depends upon individual personal fitness goals. If your goal is to bulk up and gain muscle, a caloric surplus is the right goal for you. If your goal is weight loss, then caloric deficit is the right goal for you. Once you have achieved your desired body mass, you need to focus on maintaining a caloric balance.
Determining Your Caloric Needs
To determine your calorie needs an individual needs to consider some factors like the composition of your body, gender, age, and many more, all these factors will collaboratively determine the needs of your calories.
